Black Feminist Future (BFF) is an initiative informed by the legacy of Black feminist organizing, grounded in the current pulse of movements, and located at the emergent need to amplify the power of ALL Black women and girls in organizing and building power for the 21st century. BFF is a movement incubator that focuses on the dynamic possibilities of galvanizing the social and political power of those who have the lived experience of being a Black woman or girl including but not limited to trans, cis, gender non conforming, non binary, LGBTQI, and other gender marginalized people. Our vision of Black feminisms values and centers those who are most marginalized within our communities. BFF intends to amplify and build the leadership of Black feminist leaders and increase the capacity of Black feminist movement building. Working with the Executive Director, The Deputy Director will advance and bolster the overall impact of BFF by building and fortifying the staff, organization and partners.
This position will make substantive contributions as a member of the leadership team. As a new position, the Deputy Director will actively participate in shaping this role and determining how it functions to best serve BFF’s needs and further the mission. Our culture is curious, innovative and unafraid to try new approaches, refine and try again. The Deputy Director is key in the following: Strategic Organizational Development Management and Partnerships (outlining of strategic priorities, ensuring programmatic alignment and excellence, funding and budgeting); Operations and Finance (information ecology, systems, and reporting), and Organizational fortification (human resources, organizational culture, career progression). The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED to chart BFF’s future growth and strategic response to an ever changing movement terrain.
Responsibilities Organizational Development, Management, and Partnerships
- Structure and lead teams to deliver outstanding and oftentimes collaborative work( Power Building, Communications, HR/Operations, Development)
- Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships; exceptional relationship-builder
- Develop thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas. Support with special projects as needed
- Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications internally and externally
- Partner regularly with the Executive Director to develop strategies, and detail the progress and status of various priorities, and to share with various stakeholders
- Participate in and help lead the development of strong organizational goals, planning, and strategic development.
- Create a strong culture of management, supervision, and collective care across the organization
- Lead annual work-planning and budget development process.
- Create an outcome-based annual Operations work-plan that is aligned with and grounding in BFF’s core values
Organization Strengthening and Building
- Partner with the ED in essential organizational leadership activities (staff and board meetings, political education, strategic planning, organizational planning)
- Key in fortifying and building a vibrant, dynamic organizational culture based in our values and support BFF in clearly articulating and operationalizing core values and lead in the development of accountability mechanisms to support ongoing alignment
- Manage increasing segments of information ecology, human resources (workload balancing, career progression) with related internal communications and budgeting/finance duties
- Mentoring, coaching; visible, approachable sounding board and a team resource
- Manage, supervise, and coach a team to set strategic goals, meet our fundraising and communications plan, and support a values-based organization and team culture that makes BFF a great place to work
- Supervise Director-level staff in Operations, Development, and Communications including supporting their professional development and growth.
- Serve as hiring manager, including overseeing onboarding and evaluation plan
- Support director level staff in setting clear expectations and coaching staff around providing thoughtful, ongoing, and multidirectional feedback that will support BFF’s continued growth and success
Finance and Operations
- Oversee all regular finance activities including payroll, billing processes, monthly financial reconciliation and invoicing, conducted by Admin and Operations Manager and contract Bookkeepers.
- Maintain and update financial policies and oversee annual Financial Audit with external firm.
- Primary interface with the Board Finance Committee.
- Maintain relationships and accounts with our financial institutions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must possess exceptional creativity and problem-solving skills
- Must have a strong working knowledge of management strategies, financial accounting, human resource planning
- Must be familiar with fundraising and increasing revenue while maintaining a comprehensive and cohesive brand/ identity
- Must be comfortable with public speaking and communicating both verbally and in writing
- Must be able to multitask with research projects, data analysis, coordination with the executive team,
- Must be willing to challenge the standard thinking with new ideas, new approaches, and new solutions
- Must have strong decision-making skills and the determination to see projects through to the end and make necessary, sometimes difficult pivots when appropriate
- Demonstrated skills in leadership, management, and collaboration
Education and Experience
- Must have at least 8-10 years’ experience in strategic planning, organizational management, non-profit leadership, and financial decision-making.
- Must have demonstrated proficiency in organizational development, operations and financial systems, leadership, and strategic planning.
- Prior organizing or movement building experience a plus

20-25% post COVID19
This position is located in Atlanta, GA. Due to COVID19 this role will be remote with the expectation that the candidate relocates to Atlanta. A relocation stipend will be provided.
